Biltong and wine pairing at Alto, Stellenbosch

Accentuate your palate and indulge in a story of flavour. Pair 5 of Alto’s award-winning wines with 5 unique biltong flavours.

Cost: R120 per person

Tasting room hours: 9am to 5pm from Monday to Friday

10am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays

Booking is essential for 6 or more guests.

Wine and nougat pairing at Avontuur, Helderberg

This summer, Avontuur will be bringing back their hugely popular wine and nougat pairing.

The sweet experience is self-guided, but an experienced tasting room assistant will be close at hand for any questions or comments. Book it for a morning outing with the girls, a romantic date or a group affair.

Cost: R80 per person

Tasting room hours: 8:30am to 5pm daily

MCC and Oyster Pairing at Boschendal, Franschhoek

Boschendal boasts a range of intriguing pairing experiences, from Angus beef and shiraz to MCC and canapes.

If you’re looking for something sultry, however, we suggest trying the MCC and oyster pairing.

Cost: R300 per person

Tasting room hours: 10am to 5pm daily

Flagship tasting at De Grendel, Durbanville

Indulge your senses with a tasting of De Grendel’s most prized wines. These include the 2015 MCC Brut, 2017 Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc, 2017 Op die Berg Chardonnay, 2015 Op die Berg Pinot Noir, 2016 Amandelboord Pinotage and 2015 Rubaiyat.

Cost: R100 per person

Tasting room hours: 9am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday

10am to 4pm on Sundays

Reserve tasting at Diemersdal, Durbanville

Enjoy tasting any combination of six wines from Diemersdal’s Estate and Reserve ranges. This includes the Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2018 and the Pinotage Reserve 2017.

Cost: R70

Tasting room hours: 9am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday

10am to 3pm on Sundays

Chocolate and wine pairing at Groot Constantia, Constantia

Treat yourself to a truly delectable experience at Groot Constantia, as the knowledgeable tasting room staff guide you through a pairing of 5 selected wines and 5 hand-crafted chocolates.

You can combine this with a Visitors Route Experience, which gives you access to the museums on the property, a cellar tour and a souvenir glass.

Cost: R125 per person for the pairing alone

R145 per person for the pairing plus Visitors Route Experience

Vinoteque tasting at La Motte, Franschhoek

Taste older vintages or a special selection of Syrah styles with the vinoteque tasting at La Motte.

Sit down in the elegant private tasting room for a personalised tasting where the history of wine-making at La Motte will be discussed.

You’ll learn more about the benefits of bottle ageing and maturation or discover what makes La Motte internationally and locally acclaimed for its Syrah wines.

Cost: R250 per person

Tasting hours: 9am to 2pm from Monday to Friday

Booking is essential and La Motte requires photo identification (Passport, Identity card/document or Driver’s licence) for security check-in.

Blind tasting challenge at Lourensford, Helderberg

Feel like having a bit of fun while testing your wine knowledge?

Lourensford recently started offering a blind tasting challenge, where guests will be served four wines. If they can identify them all correctly, they get the tasting FREE. However, if you’re unsuccessful, you pay the normal tasting rate.

Cost: R45 per person

Tasting room hours: 9am to 5pm from Monday to Sunday (tasting closes at 4:30pm, but wine tasting stays available till 5pm.

Flavour sensation, Plaisir de Merle, Franschhoek

The flavour sensation tasting at Plaisir de Merle is seasonal and you can look forward to wines paired with the likes of dried figs and pears, fruit cake, blue berries, or biltong.

All tastings are offered in the tasting room, an old barn built in 1823, with breath taking views of the mountain and vineyards.

Cost: R95

Tasting room hours: 10am to 6pm daily between September and April

10am to 5pm daily between May and August
