5 wine bars to try out in Joburg

Are you on the look-out for a special spot to sip your favourite wine in Joburg?

Well, the good news is, the City of Gold is home to some cosy, fun and stylish wine bars.

Here are 5 of our favourites to try out:

Le Wine Chambre, Illovo

Based in Illovo, Sandton, Le Wine Chambre is an uber stylish wine bar with an eye-popping selection of wines.

Owner, Walter Melato, has a keen interest in wine and enjoys sharing his passion with fellow wine-lovers. This is what he says about his vision for Le Wine Chambre: “I’d like to help remove ‘snobbishness’ from wine drinking. And also create an environment where people can be themselves without feeling judged. Lastly, I want to create a sophisticated, yet welcoming home away from home for wine-lover.”

We’ve hosted two Joburg Wine Club events there and enjoyed both immensely. We can definitely attest to the fact that Walter is reaching his goal with Le Wine Chambre!

Check out the Le Wine Chambre website for more information.

winesense, Melrose Arch

Part wine bar, part merchant, winesense offers top-end wines & single malt whiskys per glass with self-serve dispensing machines.

O

wner, Keith Dudula lives and breathes wine every day. He loves listening to the needs and tastes of clients and recommending the perfect one for each person. It’s this personalised type of service that just sets this congenial little bar apart.

Check out the winesense Facebook page for more information.

The Nine Barrels, Maboneng

The Nine Barrels is a wine bar set in a unique space in the heart of Maboneng Precinct in a building called The Agog.

It has a wide selection of South African and international wines and serves breakfast, tapas and dinner. With its chic-industrial interior and artistic surrounds, it’s hardly a surprise that the owners call it a space “for the curious.” The Agog building also has a rooftop space for events, where The Nine Barrels would also typically serve their wares.

Visit The Nine Barrels Facebook page for more information.

Ace + Pearl, Craighall Park

The great thing about Ace + Pearl is the fact that they’re quite honest about the fact that the drive behind their bar is not so much a knowledge about wine, as a pure and unadulterated love for it.

With their gorgeous outside space and fun approach, it’s a great spot to kick back after “one of those days” at work. They have a great selection of local and international wines and have a wonderful bistro menu to accompany the wines.

Check out the Ace + Pearl website for more details.

The Wine Bar, Soweto

Located in Soweto’s famous Vilakazi Street, The Wine Bar is set on offering a unique experience to both tourists and locals.

The wine cellar has a wide range of mostly South African wines, with a couple of international favourites. Bubbly is also a big attraction, as they stock some of the best local MCCs as well as a selection of French champagne. For those (strange) folks who don’t enjoy wine, the menu also has cocktails, beer, whiskey, brandy and cognac.
